Why Hong Kong

hand-white.png

This is a question which comes up quite often. Hong Kong is a thriving commercial city where there can be a huge disparity between those enjoying the benefits of Hong Kong and those less fortunate. The fact is that whilst they may not be homeless, children at the lower end of the economic scale can have a very tough existence indeed.

In 2020, Hong Kong’s Commission on Poverty stated that 274,900 children under the age of 18 years of age live below the poverty line.  Child poverty often leads to children having feelings of hopelessness, humiliation and poor self-esteem.  They are likely to feel marginalized, isolating themselves from other children, and unwilling to have contact with others.  Many are left at home unattended by working parents, avoiding school, yet unable to afford participation in extracurricular activities.  Many of these cases are concentrated around the Sham Shui Po area.

The Hub Hong Kong Background

The HUB is a children's support centre which provides educational support, extra-curricular classes, family counselling, social health and wellbeing services to those who need it most without discrimination.

In early 2011 the first HUB was established in Bangkok, Thailand in partnership with Childline Thailand with the support of the Royal Family.

Hong Kong based Australians David Boehm and Bruce Stinson decided they wanted to give something back to Hong Kong after 30+ years of working and living here and the outcome was a commitment to help the children in disadvantaged circumstances, especially concerning economic and social opportunities.

They believe that youths are the key for Hong Kong to continue to be a leading, growing community. They saw that not all children had the same opportunity so they decided to form a charity to give children the opportunity to find a better environment to develop into contributing members of the community.

The Hub Hong Kong Belief

Our belief is that Children are Hong Kong’s greatest assets for the future. The fact is we have children in our society that are in very difficult circumstances and we believe they should not be left behind. It is our firm belief that providing the necessities for disadvantaged children will ultimately be a benefit for both Hong Kong’s moral and economic character.

The Way Forward

In 2012 with the support of the Rotary Club of Kowloon North and from the funds raised from our first annual ball, suitable premises were found in Sham Shui Po and the centre was opened in May of 2013. It is literally a space where children could go:

To study and to do their homework

To receive help with their learning

To meet and interact with their peers

To laugh, sing and roll around on the floor - as all kids should
